GURGAON, FEB. 22. South Zone found itself in an embarrassing position on day two as a result of its indisciplined batting against England `A' in their Duleep Trophy match at the TERI Oval here on Sunday. England `A', after finishing at 377 skittled out South for 174 to take a lead of 203. By close, England `A' was 88 for three in its second essay. With the exception of Y. Venugopala Rao, who was outstanding in his defiance of an otherwise mediocre English attack, the rest of the South batsmen were guilty of showing utter disregard to the demands of the situation. One batsman after another perished to reckless shots with S. Sriram in particular responsible for triggering off the slide after being in a position of strength with National selectors, Syed Kirmani and Kiran More, watching in disbelief. Venugopala played each ball on merit and did not lose his composure when it was pitched short. With skipper S. Ramesh unable to bat because of injury, South did not get the desired start. Two early blows saw Ibrahim Khaleel and Barrington Rowland depart cheaply but Sriram and Venugopala stemmed the slide. Sriram showed no discomfort in crafting 44 off 79 balls with seven fours before an ungainly swipe left his stumps in shambles. From 77 for two South quickly slipped to 96 for six. Only S. Sharath was consumed by a good ball from Simon Jones that he fended to short leg. Venugopala, who remained unbeaten with 58 (103 balls, three fours), was supported by the lower order batsman R. Ramkumar (43 off 40 balls with six fours and one six). But a series of ugly shots left South grieving and gave off-spinner James Tredwell flattering figures. In its second venture, England `A' again owed it to the first-innings centurion Kevin Pietersen, who cracked an attractive 65 off 79 balls with five fours and two sixes, including 18 runs in one over by left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi.
