Adventure carnival begins at Muzhappilangad

By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, FEB. 18. The palm-fringed Muzhappilangad beach here will be the destination of adventure-seekers for the next few days as the Adventure Academy of the State Youth Welfare Board has begun the `Adventure Carnival' in association with the Malabar Aero Sports Society (MASS) and the Kerala chapter of the National Adventure Foundation (NAF).

With the formal inauguration of the carnival by M.V. Jayarajan, the local MLA, this afternoon, the beach was also expected to attract more tourists.

For the next five days, adventure-seekers visiting the beach could get airborne on the microlite gliders and parasailors. The organisers would also conduct `island visit' sailing to Dharmadom Thuruth, a small island, towards the south of the beach.

The board vice-chairman, Martin George, the member secretary, N.C. Vijayakumar, the MASS director, Zafar Ahmed, the NAF Kerala Chapter director, S.K.J. Nair, and the Adventure Carnival chief co-ordinator, Sibagathulla, were among those present at the function.

Mr. Vijayakumar said that the board was considering a proposal to set up a permanent parasailing and gliding unit on the beach. There were also plans for organising water sports such as surfing and parasailing attached to a boat. The beach was found to be ideal for holding such adventure sports programmes.

The Adventure Academy's sub centre need some land for setting up dormitory facilities, he said. The Academy was also planning to purchase three more gliders, he added. The organisers said that the parasailing and microlite gliding evoked good response from the public, especially girls. The organisers were collecting Rs.125 for parasailing and Rs.400 for microlite gliding. A discount would be allowed to NCC cadets and members of youth organisations affiliated to the board, they said.
