Photo contest

KOLLAM Feb. 6. The Rotary Club of Kollam City, in association with the Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited, is conducting a State-level photography competition on `road safety'. There is a separate category for media photographers and they can send in entries, based on the topic, which had been published last year. While winners selected from the general category would be given cash prizes and a trophy in addition to a citation, the winner from the media section would be presented the Victor George Memorial Special Award. IT training

The Kerala Educational Development and Employment Society is organising a vocational training programme in Information Technology. The programme is being conducted in association with the Jan Shikshan Sansthan, the P.N. Panikkar Manava Vikas Kendra and the Small Industries Development Bank of India. Workshop

The Indian Bank conducted a two-day workshop for women entrepreneurs of Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts on February 5 and 6. The workshop was inaugurated by the Kollam Mayor, Sabita Beegum. The deputy general manager of the Indian Bank, R. Sathyanarayana Murthy, presided over the function. Experts from NABARD, Kudumbashree, the District Industries Centre and the Women Development Corporation conducted classes.

Award

THRISSUR Feb. 6. An award has been instituted in memory of Kodungallur Kunjunni Thampuran, guru of Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon, the father of modern Kathakali practice. The award, instituted by Prof. P. Aravindakshan and his brothers, will be given by Kerala Kalamandalam. Exponents of classical art forms such as Kathakali and Koodiyattom, below the age of 40, will be considered for the award, says a press release.

Dead man identified

A man who was stabbed to death at the Swaraj Round here on Thursday was identified as Kannan (25) of Kothre House, Marathakkara, a carpenter. According to the police, Kannan was stabbed in the chest. He was rushed to the hospital, but died on admission. The police said Kannan had reported for duty on Thursday, drunk, and was not allowed to work. He collected Rs.600 from his employer and left with a friend. The police said they had widened their dragnet in the search for the killer.

Platform ticket machine

An automatic platform ticket selling machine will be installed at the Thrissur railway station from February 8. The chief commercial manager of South Railways, Thomas Varghese, will commission the machine, says a press release.

Quiz contest winners

KOTTAYAM Feb. 6. The two-member team comprising Nikhil Issac and Noble Ulahannan from Pavanathma College, Murikkassery, has lifted the K.U. John Trophy at the quiz competition organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS). The NSS Hindu College, Changanassery and the Government Law College, Ernakulam came second and third respectively.

The Akhila Kerala Viswakarma Mahasabha has welcomed the Union Government's decision to raise the income ceiling for the creamy layer segments. However, this liberalised policy would not help the Viswakarma community as per the existing rules in the State, according to a press note. The association urged the authorities to make necessary changes in the rule so that the community could make use of the Government decision.

KVVES district

conference

ALAPPUZHA Feb. 6. The Information Minister, M.M. Hassan, would inaugurate the Alappuzha district conference of Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES) at A.M. Abdul Jabbar Nagar (Municipal Ground) at 5 p.m. on February 8. The Samiti State president, T. Naziruddin, will deliver the keynote address.
