CHENNAI, JAN. 29. The Rs. 121.74-crore, six-lane Information Technology Expressway from south Chennai to Mamallapuram is expected to be completed before the year-end. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, has ordered officials to start work immediately on the international standard expressway. According administrative sanction, she has asked them to complete the two phases of the infrastructure project by the end of 2004, an official release said today. The 47-km stretch of the expressway (Old Mamallapuram Road) houses a large number of IT and software companies, including the TIDEL Park. The first phase would be 22-km long from Madhya Kailash (near Adyar) to Siruseri. The second phase would be 25 km from Siruseri to Mamallapuram. The expressway would have a two-metre wide central median. The six-lane carriageway would be fully paved on either side. Alongside would be stormwater drains, rainwater harvesting systems and a special duct for carrying power, and telephone and optic fibre cables. This would ensure that the highway was not dug up for maintenance work. A service lane would run along the stretch for passengers using the Mass Rapid Transit System. The project would be implemented by the I.T Expressway Limited, a special purpose vehicle floated by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation. "The creation of international standard facilities would help to bring more software companies to the State and the stretch would turn into India's `Bay area,' the release said.
