Temperature

MADURAI, JAN. 18 . The city today recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2 degree Celsius and a minimum of 18 degree Celsius. No rainfall was recorded at the Madurai airport during the last 24 hours.

Boy drowned

A 17-year-old boy was drowned when he was taking bath in a tank near Alagarkoil today.

The police said N. Ravi Kumar and his friend, C. Eswaran (20) of Oomachikulam, went for a bath in the `teppakulam' this morning. Eswaran raised an alarm when he noticed that his friend suddenly disappeared. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved the body. The Oomachikulam police have registered a case.

Dismissed

A temporary worker of the Government Rajaji Hospital was dismissed for graft.

Hospital sources said Vijayarani, posted in the maternity block, demanded Rs. 150 from the attendants of a woman who delivered a baby on Saturday. Even as they offered Rs. 100, she insisted that they should pay in full, or compensate it with a nose-ring.

Based on a complaint, the Dean, James Pandian, dismissed her from service. She was handed over to the Mathichiam police.

Grievance day

The Superintending Engineer, Madurai Distribution Circle, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, will conduct a division-level grievance day meeting at the office of the Executive Engineer (Distribution), Tirumangalam, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on January 20, according to a release.

Chief Minister thanked

The Federation of Residents' Associations of Madurai-Palamedu Road has thanked the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for having sanctioned Rs 3.48 crores for providing drinking water from the Vaigai dam to the residents of the area.

In a statement, the president, S. A. Chockkalingam, also thanked the president of the Vilangudi town panchayat, K. Dhiraviyam, for getting the funds sanctioned for the drinking water supply scheme.

Revolving fund distributed

The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, distributed a revolving fund of Rs. 10.5 lakhs to 45 thrift societies run by women. Each group was given Rs. 25,000 for 2003-04.

The fund has been distributed under the Swarna Jayanthi Rozgar Yojna (SJRY) for the uplift of urban poor. A total of 6,000 women are members of the 375 groups that function under the Corporation, and their savings have touched Rs. 1.72 crores.
