By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, JAN. 18 . The Tamil language and literature will flourish, only if writers are patronised, the Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, said today. Speaking at a function got up for the release of some books, he said more people showing interest in visiting book exhibitions indicated that the reading habit was going up. Releasing six books written by Professor R. Mohan of the Madurai Kamaraj University, he said Coimbatore was among the five cities that had more number of people with reading habit, and Madurai was lagging. Lauding the efforts of Prof. Mohan, he said similar efforts would facilitate the growth of Tamil language and literature. The interpreters were as important as the creators for their reader-friendly interpretations of literary works, said Tamizhannal, former professor of Tamil, Madurai Kamaraj University. "The learning process for a litterateur goes on, and it can make him feel young," he said. The Vice-Chancellor, P.K. Ponnuswamy, said it was encouraging to note that the awareness of book exhibitions was increasing. Tamil language and literature teachers winning awards for their works were more in other States. The professors who preferred writing literary works in Tamil should make sincere efforts at writing books in English, he added. Earlier the Speaker released `Kanavai Nanavakkum Kalam', `Naal oru sindhanai', `Pudhumaipithan muthirai kathaigal', `Ku.Pa.Rajagopalan muthirai kathaikal', `Punaikathai thiran', and `Urai Marabugal'.
