KGOA demands wage revision

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMKOCHIPALAKKADKOZHIKODE, JAN. 11.JAN. 11.JAN. The Kerala Gazetted Officers' Association (KGOA) has protested against the delay in starting the procedures for wage revision in Government services. In a statement here today, the KGOA said the wage revision had, in fact, fallen due in March 2002. The cost of all essential commodities had gone up and the fixed income group was finding it difficult to make both ends meet. Since the wage revision was getting delayed indefinitely, the employees should be given an interim relief immediately, in addition to the overdue instalments of dearness allowance. The KGOA would hold dharnas before the Secretariat and in all the district headquarters on January 16 to press this demand, the statement said.

Regional reservation

The Commissioner of Entrance Examinations today clarified that regional reservation to a candidate appearing for the medical/engineering entrance examinations would be on the basis of the location of the institution where he or she had studied. Special reservations are offered for students from Travancore-Cochin (TC) as well as Malabar (ML). In the fourth page of the application form for entrance examination, item 15 is for certification in this regard. The certification has to be made in the application itself by the head of the institution where the candidate had studied for the qualifying examination. The Commissionerate of Entrance Examinations will accept no other certificate. This means that, only candidates who had studied for the qualifying examinations in institutions located in Kerala are eligible for regional reservation under either TC quota or ML quota. These candidates should indicate their claim (whether they are eligible for TC quota or ML quota) against item 8 in the OMR data sheet of the application forms and then darken the relevant square, the statement said.

`Disclose cost of Ministers' trip'

The National Labour Organisation (NLO) has asked the Government to disclose the full particulars of the amount the Ministers had spent for their trips to New Delhi in connection with the ongoing dispute over a leadership change in the Government. In a statement here today, the organisation said that while some Ministers were flying to New Delhi to argue for the Chief Minister, some others had his removal from the post as their mission. Some Ministers were making their trips on being invited by the Congress high command and some others were going there uninvited. Though the Government was in a debt trap, the exchequer's money was being heavily wasted to sort out what was essentially an internal problem of the Congress party. Such amount should be recovered from the Ministers themselves and remitted in the treasury, the statement said.

`Bad motives in targeting Soopy'

The Government College Teachers' Organisation (GCTO) today alleged that the people, who targeted the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, in connection with various issues including the B.Ed. college controversy, had certain ulterior motives. In a statement here today, the GCTO said the Council of Ministers had the collective responsibility for all decisions taken in the education sector, but Mr. Soopy was being singled out for attack. It would appear that certain forces were trying to take advantage of the peculiar political situation prevailing in the State and unseat him to grab the Education portfolio, the statement added.

RSP seeks judicial probe

The RSP State secretary, T.J. Chandrachoodan, has demanded a judicial inquiry into the allegations relating to sanctioning of B.Ed. colleges in the State. In a statement here today, Prof. Chandrachoodan said a judicial probe was essential in the light of the disclosure by the Metropolitan of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders had approached him demanding Rs. 2 lakhs as bribe for sanctioning a college to the church. The allegation, if true, showed that the IUML leaders would have taken crores of rupees in bribe from individual managements. If the Chief Minister was not prepared to order a judicial inquiry, it would have to be assumed that the UDF was collectively responsible for the corruption involved in the sanctioning of B. Ed. colleges, the RSP leader said.
