BANGALORE, JAN. 10. Taking knowledge about space technology to the masses in their native languages will answer their questions and complaints, if any, on the activities of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO, said here on Saturday. Mr. Nair was speaking after releasing the book, Kaksheyalli Bharatha, the Kannada version of India in Orbit authored by Mohan Sundar Rajan. The book, translated by G.K. Srinivas, has been brought out by Yojana, the Publications Division of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Mr. Nair said a similar book on space technology circulated in Kerala was popular among students, and added that such initiatives were welcome. He said at present, 130 Indian transponders were in space meeting the nation's requirements. The remote sensing satellite images were being used in rainwater harvesting and locating water sources, thereby bringing in drastic changes in agriculture. The technology was extensively used for the survey on the proposed interlinking of rivers. "It takes centuries to go round the country and collect data. This has been avoided as we are closely working with the task force on interlinking of rivers," Mr. Nair said. He said space technology would also provide value addition to the business community by linking the banking sector and the stock markets. It would provide medical facilities to faraway places through telemedicine.
