Assumes charge

CHENNAI JAN. 2. Air Commodore Sapan Kumar Karmaker today took charge as the Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station, Tambaram from Air Commodore MPS Gill. Air Commodore Karmaker was commissioned a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force in 1973.

He commanded a Mig-21 Fighter Squadron in the Eastern Sector, Basic Flying School, Allahabad, and a frontline base in the Jammu and Kashmir sector.

His other posts were as Command Air Defence Officer at the Central Air Command, Deputy Commandant at the College of Airwarfare, Secunderabad, and Air-I at the Maintenance Command, a Defence release said today.

A qualified flying instructor, he has over 4,500 hours of flying on aircraft such as the MiG-21, MiG-25, Hunters, Kiran and HPT-32. He was commended for his distinguished service by the Chief of Air Staff in 1990 and awarded the Vayu Sena Medal in 1998.
