Ramesh makes it in style

By Rakesh Rao

LUCKNOW SEPT. 25. The end was far less thrilling than anticipated.

After Gurpreet Pal Singh and Neeraj Mishra quickly played it safe, the other overnight leader R.B. Ramesh scored a regulation victory in the final round to deservedly walk away with honours in the Piloo Mody international rating chess tournament here on Thursday.

Ramesh, playing white, outclassed S.K. Rathore in just 42 moves of Ruy Lopez by ripping open the black's kingside. Rathore, who had earned a clash against Ramesh after beating Himanshu Sharma on Wednesday, committed a few errors of judgement which cost him two pawns.

This advantage was enough for Ramesh to decide the title. Had Ramesh drawn the game, he would have still won the title but the prize-money would have been shared by three others.

Eventually, Ramesh finished at nine points and stayed half a point clear. This was Ramesh's third individual title in a row and once again, he was undefeated. He won the Adyar Times Open and was part of the Petroleum squad that retained the National team championship before claiming the National `B' title last month.

In fact, like in the National `B', Ramesh never trailed in the championship. He collected Rs. 40,000 from what was his first competition after getting married to Woman Grandmaster Aarthie Ramaswamy.

Like Ramesh, a recently-married Gurpreet also had a reason to be pleased with his performance. He retained his runner-up slot, shared by Neeraj and comeback-man Dinesh. The trio, tied at 8.5 points, ensured Rs. 16,666 each.

The Kanpur-based Dinesh, who at one stage was contemplating pulling out of the event after suffering two losses, overwhelmed R. Balasubramanium to register his fourth straight victory.

Varugeese Koshy, Abhijeet Gupta, Anup Deshmukh, Poobesh Anand and P. Konguvel tied for the fifth spot with eight points and finished in that order on progressive scores. They got Rs. 2,500 each.

Final standing: 1. R.B. Ramesh (9 points), 2-4. Gurpreet Pal Singh, Neeraj Mishra and Dinesh Sharma (8.5), 5-9. Varugeese Koshy, Abhijeet Gupta, Anup Deshmukh, Poobesh Anand and P. Konguvel.
