Mohun Bagan in final

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA SEPT. 25. Mohun Bagan moved into the final of the 109th IFA Shield football tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Thursday. Mohun Bagan defeated Tollygunge Agragami 4-1 after being 1-1 at halftime.

In a mediocre match under lights, Mohun Bagan took time to settle down before dominating the proceedings, thanks to the promptings by midfielder Mehtab Hossain. Tollygunge, which fought well in the first half, faded out in the second to concede three goals.

After a lot of midfield exchanges and attacks and counter-attacks, Mohun Bagan surged forward in the 21st minute through Rishi Kapoor. The striker's attempt to float the ball into the rival box not only beat the Tollygunge goalkeeper Chinmoy Banerjee but swung into the net.

The success was short-lived. Within two minutes, Tollygunge struck back. A Tenjen Kaibang flagkick was headed in by Awoyemi Osoaka beating Prasanta Dora in the air. Mohun Bagan strived hard to dominate the proceedings but the Tollygunge defence held firm.

Jose Ramirez Barreto struck within three minutes of resumption. Babun Kar sent the ball to Mehtab Hossain whose square pass to Barreto was deftly placed home.

Mohun Bagan got the third goal in the 72nd minute through substitute Marcos Pariera. It was a great move initiated by Hossain. Marcos who received the pass passed it to Barreto and received a chip inside the box to place home.

With a minute to go for the final whistle, Babun Kar sent the ball to Hossain whose right wing cross to the penalty box found Barreto in a perfect position to direct the header into the net.

It was a thumping win for Mohun Bagan. To win a trophy this season, Mohun Bagan would take on the winner of the second semifinal between East Bengal and Ever-Ready Association to be played on Friday. The final is slated for Sunday.
