Lakshit Sood beaten

KOLKATA SEPT. 3. Five seeds failed to sprout on the opening day of the Nike junior Tour at the Bengal Tennis Association Complex on Wednesday. In the boys' under-12 group, top seed Lakshit Sood of Delhi was eliminated by local boy Prem Singh in straight sets 7/5, 6/4.

Prem displayed maturity beyond his ten years of age in handling Lakshit. The young Bengal Tennis Association trainee played an all round game to outwit Lakshit to advance to second round.

In another upset, sixth seed Gaurav Baruah of Assam was ousted by wild card entry, Ayush Bajoria, who came back from a set down to take the next two at 3/6, 6/2, 6/2.

U.M. Gugan Verma from Tamil Nadu showed the door to eighth seed Rohit Patel from Chhattisgarh in straight sets, 6/2, 6/1.

Bibaswan Deb made short work of qualifier Samudra Sarangi of Orissa. Little boy from Jharkhand, Prasenjit Paul, played some delightful tennis to whitewash lucky loser Tushar Mandlekar of Chhattisgarh 6/0, 6/0.

In the boys' under-14 category, lucky loser U.M. Gugan Verma, in a keenly contested match, defeated fifth seed Suman Kumar Debnath of Assam. Verma prevailed 5/7, 6/4, 6/1. Qualifier Akshay Ashok from Kerala ousted eighth seed Lakshit Sood from Delhi 6/4, 6/1.
