The operation, which began at 11 p.m., was supervised by government officials amid tight security. A couple of earth movers were used to bring down the structure. The debris of the structure was dumped in Corporation lorries and taken away from the spot. More than two-dozen policemen, stationed there, prevented presspersons and the general public from getting close to the spot. Approach roads to the Seerani Arangam were cordoned off.
File photo shows Seerani Arangam being constructed in September 1969.
Presspersons and photographers appealed to officials and policemen for taking pictures, but in vain. More than a dozen lathi-wielding policemen pushed the journalists back. An inspector, M. Chandrasekharan, accused the media of causing hindrance to the operation. When contacted, senior police officials refused to intervene. R. Chinnaraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Triplicane, who was on the spot, instructed the policemen not to allow presspersons and photographers near the structure. Additional policemen were deployed at the spot at 1 a.m.
