Parthasarathy memorial trust launches scholarship scheme

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI JULY 28. Tributes were paid to S. Parthasarathy of the Indian Police and founder of the Saturday Evening Club at the launch of a scholarship scheme today by the trustees of the `Mr. S. Parthasarathy IP (Retd.) Centenary Celebrations Memorial Trust', Chennai.

V. Vaikunth, former Director-General of Police, who is the trust's secretary and trustee, said a trust deed had been entered into with the State Bank of India, Securities and Services Division, creating a corpus of Rs. 1.55 lakhs and the interest accruing would be given to the Plus-Two topper of The Hindu Higher Secondary School where Mr. Parthasarathy studied.

However, the first scholarship will go to a student passing out of the school in 2004 as it would take one year for the interest to accrue. The student should have got admission for a professional or other degree course but should not be monetarily in a position to pursue his higher professional education including MBBS, BDS, BE, B.Tech, BCA or BL, he said. The current corpus allowed for provision of fees for four years for only one student. If the corpus fund increased, the scheme would be extended for more students.

V.R. Lakshmi Narayanan, former DGP and managing trustee, said the trust would like to have more scholarships for students of the less affluent classes from next year onward.

S. Ramani, Additional DGP (Headquarters), receiving the laminated version of the sale deed said five students including himself trained with Mr. Parthasarathy as members of the Saturday Evening Club and all of them were well placed in the Civil and Railway services. P.S. Raghavan, son of S. Parthasarathy, N.C. Raghavachari, president, Hindu Educational Organisations, Narayan Ramaswamy, secretary, Management Committee, The Hindu Higher Secondary School, and S. Nagarajan, trustee, spoke.
