Konguvel becomes joint-leader

Kolhapur July 25. Former National champion, IM P. Konguvel (7.5) of ONGC, scored a series of victories to catch up with overnight leader S. Satyapragyan (7.5) of Indian Airlines, at the end of nine rounds in the Rajarshi Shahu Trophy international rating chess tournament here on Friday.

Satyapragyan, caught in a web of draws in spite of his Herculean efforts, now has to battle it out with Konguvel in the tenth and penultimate round.

Ravi had earlier outplayed IM Rahul Shetty in the first decisive game amongst the Masters in this tournament. Ravi unleashed a vicious attack against the black king by sacrificing his bishop.

Rahul sportingly resigned after Ravi threatened with heavy material gains on twentieth move.

"I just cannot believe that I lost the game in such a manner," confessed Rahul.

Eighth round: Deshmukh drew with Satyapragyan, Balasubramanium drew with Sivanandan, Shazuli lost to Konguvel, Ravi bt Rahul Shetty (IA) 5.5, Swati Mohota (WB) 5 lost Sharma 6, Laxman bt D. Ravishankar (Mah) 5, Gokhale bt Saket Kumar (HP) 5, Vedant Goswami (Raj) 5.5 drew with Kulkarni 5.5.
