By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM July 15. The All-India Youth Federation's (AIYF) `Assembly march' to protest against the Government's health, education and labour policies turned violent today when the activists started throwing stones and clashed with the police.

As many as 18 police personnel, including the City Police Commissioner, Rajan Singh, the Thampanoor Circle Inspector, Viswananthan, were injured in the stone-throwing.

Seven AIYF activists were also injured when the police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the activists who tried to break the police cordon. The only double-decker bus of the KSRTC was severely damaged in the stone-throwing. The march, which started from near the Press Club buildings, was stopped by the police a couple of yards away from the Legislature complex. Following this, the activists at the rear of the march started throwing stones at the police personnel stationed behind the barricades.

Of the 18 policemen, including 13 constables, injured in the clash, five were admitted in the Medical College hospital. Meanwhile, the Museum police have registered a case against 500 persons for rioting, attempt to murder and for obstructing the police from discharging their duties.
