Mr. Shetty sought bail afresh and the matter will be heard on June 26. Earlier, his bail plea was rejected twice.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate, R.P. Mehta, turned down the police plea to remand Mr. Shetty to police custody for a week and instead remanded him to judicial custody for two days.
Mr. Shetty was arrested on June 21 and remanded to police custody till today.
During the three-day interrogation, police collected his voice sample to match with the one in a telephonic conversation with Pankaj Agarwal, owner of Prafull Sarees. Mr. Shetty was arrested on May 21 after the Gujarat High Court rejected his bail.
In keeping with a court directive, Mrs. Sunanda appeared in person and urged the Chief Judicial Magistrate to defer the case as she was undergoing treatment in a Mumbai Hospital.
Police have questioned Mr. Shetty's former driver, Dilip Palsikar, who allegedly hired gangsters at the behest of the accused.
