UDF loses Alappuzha municipality

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA JUNE 24. The Alappuzha municipal chairperson, Molly Jacob, of the Congress was voted out today.

The municipal council which met here today morning approved a no-confidence motion brought by the opposition LDF.

In the 49-member council, 27 members voted for the motion. Those who supported it included 21 members of the LDF, three of the BJP and an independent, Illikkal Kunjumon, who had earlier supported the UDF. The municipal vice-chairman, S. B. Bashir, who had been ousted from the IUML recently and Lalasan, a concillor who had been ousted from the Congress, also voted in favour of the motion.

The UDF and the PDP abstained from voting. It was only seven months ago that Ms. Molly Jacob took over as the chairperson of Alappuzha municipality following the resignation of Shanimol Usman of the Congress. Ms. Shanimol resigned from the post when she was appointed the chairperson of the State unit of the Mahila Congress.

Ms. Shanimol had also faced two no-confidence motions. The uncertainty in the Alappuzha municipal administration is the result of factionalism in various parties, including that in the Congress, the main partner of the UDF.
