dated June 9, 1953: Queen honours mountaineers

On the 6th, Queen Elizabeth II awarded a knighthood to Colonel Hunt, leader of the British Expedition to Mount Everest, and made Edmund Hillary a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. An announcement from the Prime Minister's Office said Her Majesty desired also to honour Sherpa Tenzing, but since he was not a British subject the matter required consultation. The honours announcement came only six days after the Coronation honours list. Royal honours were normally awarded only twice a year, at New Year and at the Royal birthday. Awards in between were rare.
