Protect Ezhava interests: Natesan

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 17. The SNDP Yogam general secretary, Vellappalli Natesan, has stated that the Yogam would extend support only to those candidates who looked after the interests of the members of the Ezhava community in the ensuing elections.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Natesan said that the Yogam was compelled to take such a decision after carrying out a study on the ground realities in the State. Most of the political parties viewed the community only as a vote bank and forgot them after the elections. While other communities had gained as a result of political power, the Ezhava community was yet to enjoy the benefits, he said.

Stating that caste system was a social reality, Mr. Natesan said there was nothing wrong in saying about a person's caste when such a system prevailed in the country. Representation for the community is the agenda of the Yogam and the community would support those persons who would help the Ezhava community to come up in society, he added.

Criticising the UDF Government for what he termed as the `go-slow' attitude, Mr. Natesan said the Yogam would launch a State-wide protest against the UDF Government for what he termed as `injustice towards the community' in the education sector.

Though the LDF Government had sanctioned Plus Two courses in four schools managed by the SNDP Yogam apart from issuing notification in six schools, the UDF Government was yet to give clearance for the Plus Two course in many notified schools. This had paved the way for the denial of education for the members of the community, he said.

Though the UDF and the LDF Governments had made use of the money from the Toddy Workers Welfare Fund, the Governments had not carried out any welfare measures for toddy tappers, he said.

Stating that politicians and political parties had accepted donations from abkaris, Mr. Natesan wanted to know whether the politicians or political parties had the guts not to accept donation from abkaris.

On reports that the Yogam was trying to get close to the BJP, he said the Yogam had approached the BJP just because it was heading the NDA which rules the country. He also said that there was nothing wrong in approaching the Union Ministry for sanctioning the Sree Narayana University.

However, Mr. Natesan added that the Yogam did not have any plan to enter into an electoral alliance with the BJP and said that there was no scope for a third front in the State.
