Jalandhar judge sent to judicial custody

Chandigarh May 17. The suspended Jalandhar District and Sessions Judge, R.M. Gupta, after being in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) remand for six days, was today sent to judicial custody till May 30, when he would be produced before the special CBI court here.

The judge, arrested by the CBI in a bribery case last week, was today produced at 3.30 p.m. by the investigation agency before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), C.L. Mohal, for further CBI remand.

But the CJM ordered for the 13-day judicial custody of the accused, denying any extension to the CBI remand.

Gupta would now be presented in the court of special CBI Judge, Balbir Singh, on May 30.

Counsel for the CBI had asked for continuance of Gupta's police remand for eight days on the ground that the accused would be confronted with the elusive city judicial magistrate, S.S. Bhardwaj, another accused in the case who has filed an anticipatory bail in the CBI court.— UNI
