Vijayakumar, new Commissioner

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI MAY 14. The average span a Corporation Commissioner hold office has further shortened, with the replacement of M. Kalaivanan on Thursday.

He has swapped jobs with the Project Director of DANIDA Health Care Project, M.P.Vijayakumar and will hand over charge tomorrow.

Mr.Vijayakumar will be the seventh Commissioner of Chennai Corporation since the AIADMK came to power.

The Commissioner who have been shifted so far include J.Radhakrishnan, J.T.Acharyulu, P.R.Shampath, T.N.Ramanathan, A.Karthik and Mr.Kalaivanan.

Incidentally, Mr.Kalaivanan had held the post for the longest period in this regime.

He took over from A.Karthik last June.

The frequent transfer of officials had often been criticised in the Corporation Council meetings, with the Opposition parties stating that it resulted in a virtual freeze of the administration. Often, the projects launched during an official's tenure suffer when somebody else fill in resulting in delays and unnecessary hardship to the residents, they said.
