NEW DELHI MAY 1. The U.S. retail chain major Walmart and garment majors including GAP are keen on making India their sourcing hub with the former targetting $5 billion worth of sourcing by 2010, Union Textiles Minister Kashiram Rana today said.

"Retail chain major Walmart, garment major GAP are keen to make India their sourcing hub," he told reporters here. He said Walmart, which already had an outsourcing centre in Bangalore was in the process of setting up a new centre here to source from units located in North India. Stating that while the current outsourcing could be in the range of $700 million, Mr. Rana said Walmart was eyeing sourcing worth $5 billion from India by 2010.

Walmart at present sources home furnishings, T-shirts and night suits from units located around Bangalore like Tirupur and Karur through its Bangalore office. He said the Capital was emerging as a big centre for sourcing of readymade garments like shirts, trousers and tops. Mr. Rana said in a bid to support the textile units and exporters, the Government had already given its approval for setting up of apparel parks and work was underway in Surat. — PTI
