Togadia defies ban, distributes tridents

Ajmer April 13. The VHP leader, Praveen Togadia, was tonight arrested after he distributed tridents to Bajrang Dal activists here defying ban and prohibitory orders.

Mr. Togadia distributed the tridents among a gathering of 3,000 Dal activists amid chanting of hymns and slogans at the Subhash Udyan.

He said the coming Assembly polls in Rajasthan would be fought on the issue of tridents and attacked the ruling Congress for ``placating'' Muslims for electoral gains.

He said the Ashok Gehlot Government had, by banning tridents, given a publicity to Trishul Deeksha which he would not have got even by spending lakhs of rupees. He demanded India be declared a Hindu Rashtra

Within hours, police arrested the VHP leader, under the Arms Act, near Kishangunj, about 40 km from here, as he headed towards Jaipur after the tridents distribution, a senior police official said.

VHP calls for bandh

PTI reports from New Delhi:

Terming the arrest as ``high-handedness'', VHP called for `Rajasthan bandh' on Tuesday.
