Angry tusker at it again

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI APRIL 6 . The angry tusker of Shiroor Math, "Lakshmeesha", which created havoc in the city a few days ago, attacked a person on Sunday.

The legs of the tusker have been chained and it has been tied to the trees in front of the Mathura Chatra. When Ravindra Shenoy went to lock the chains tied to the legs of the elephant, it brushed him aside. Mr. Shenoy suffered minor injuries.

The problems connected with the tusker have become a major irritation to the Police Department. They cite lack of cooperation from the math authorities in this regard. Police are guarding the tusker round-the-clock. Controlling the public, who keep pouring in to see the elephant, has added to their problems.

Prashanth, veterinary officer, told The Hindu that the tusker was angry.

The chains tied to its legs were not strong enough. For this purpose, the elephant would be sedated with a "Xylazine" injection, he said.

The female tusker, "Subhadra", of Sri Krishna Math would be tied beside "Lakshmeesha" so that it could calm down.

Only patient and careful handling could bring down the anger of the elephant.
