This Day That Age
Broadcasting to the nation from capital Teheran on the 16th, Iran's Prime Minister, Dr. Mohammed Mossadeq, said he never intended to change the country from a monarchy into a Republic and become President himself. Reiterating his loyalty to the Shah and Constitution, Dr. Mossadeq declared: "In Constitutional monarchies the sovereign has no responsibility to govern. The Shah should reign and not rule. I appeal to the Majlis (Lower House) to pass the Committee report which will ensure this position." The report referred to was drawn up by a committee of eight deputies who had been trying to patch up difference between the Court and the Government. The Committee was set up after demonstrations in March when the Shah announced he was going abroad on a "health pilgrimage".
