Krishna, Naidu to share dais at Telugu Vignana Samithi

Bangalore March 15. They may be rivals for attracting overseas investment in the hi-tech sector but will be sharing the same stage here.

The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, and his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, N. Chandrababu Naidu, will attend the inauguration of the golden jubilee celebrations of Telugu Vignana Samithi, Bangalore, on March 22. On the dais with them will be the Minister for Social Welfare, A. Krishnappa, and the former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Ramesh Kumar.

The samithi will, on the occasion, honour several persons for their contribution to art, language, music, and films. They include K.J. Yesudas, Kota Harinarayana, Turlapati Kutumba Rao, P. Susheela, and G. Nandakumar.

The samithi President, A. Radhakrishna Raju, told presspersons that these eminent persons would be felicitated in the presence of C. Narayan Reddy, MP, and Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Cultural Council. The Dadasaheb Phalke award winner and veteran Telugu actor, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, and the Minister for Mines and Geology, V. Muniyappa, would also be present. The celebrations were in keeping with the cordial relations between Kannadigas and Telugus, right from the days when both had common rulers such as Krishnadeva Raya, he said.

There will be several cultural programmes, including singing of Telugu ghazals, a new genre created by C. Narayan Reddy. Shobha Raju from Hyderabad will sing the keertanas of Annamacharya and the traditional Perini Shivatandavam will be performed by B. Srinivasa Rao and party, while the Andhra Pradesh Praja Natya Mandali will present folk art items. In the evening, there will be a concert by K.J. Yesudas and P. Susheela, along with playback singers of yesteryear and today's generation.

March 23 will see a `sahitya sammelan' where the age-old connections between Kannada and Telugu literature and the links between the Kannada and the Telugu film worlds will be discussed. The Vice-Chancellor of Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, G.V. Subramanyam, will be the chief guest. This will be followed by a musical night featuring P.B. Sreenivas and S. Janaki whose songs in both Kannada and Telugu movies are still popular.

The valedictory function will have the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, the BJP President, M. Venkaiah Naidu, and the Union Minister, U.V. Krishnam Raju, on the stage. The guests of honour will include the Karnataka Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Ramalinga Reddy, the Minister of State for Rural Development, M. Diwakar Babu, the Chairman of the Golden Jubilee Committee, D.K. Audikeshavulu, and K.B. Munivenkata Reddy, MLC.

The celebrations will be held at Shantiniketan on Whitefield Road, which has been named Krishnadevaraya Nagara for the occasion.
