Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By R. Sujatha
The corporation has taken up patchwork on the Broadway bus stand where north Chennai-bound buses are parked. The MTC has `entry on permission' status and cannot do much to improve the conditions of the shed. However, it will take up levelling of the Law College bus shed and work would be finished by this month-end. Improving facilities would depend on higher revenue. The route numbers have been put up on the poles supporting the roof of the sheds a portion of the pole has been painted yellow and the route numbers have been printed in black. The place of origin and termination are put up in Tamil in black letters on overhead yellow boards. In the MTC bus terminus, red and blue panels have been put up to inform passengers of the route and number details, said the officials. Nearly 1,000 buses have been parked inside the sheds, making it easy for users of the NSC Bose Road and other adjacent roads. Space constraint leads to haphazard parking of the buses inside the shed, putting commuters to hardship. Efforts are on to reclaim the land leased to wayside teashops near the terminus. On increasing services during rush hours and re-routing buses during non-rush hours, the officials said, during non-rush hours, more buses have been routed to Koyambedu. Currently, only 40 per cent of the MTC buses are making profit. A collection of Rs. 3,000 on a route would be considered viable but a collection of Rs. 4,500 is the break-even and anything above that would mean the MTC was making profit, as per the costing regime adopted by the corporation. Only routes that lead out of the city are currently considered `profit-making' sectors, they said.
