He was speaking at a workshop on the carrying capacity study conducted at the School of Marine Sciences auditorium in the city on Wednesday. The study was sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. "Reports do not self-execute. They have to be executed. Activisation and sensitisation of those in power is required to address social issues concerning people. People can urge the President and Prime Minister to implement the report for the welfare of the entire society,'' Mr.Iyer said. He said that a campaign had to be launched to implement the report which deals in detail with the pollution in three main areas including air, land and water. "The report should be taken up seriously. A discussion should be initiated in various public institutions, colleges and local bodies. Inputs from the people have to be included in the final report,' he said. He termed the environmental condition of Kochi as "dangerous'' and urged the authorities to develop a vision plan for the welfare of future generations. "The survival of human species is in the hands of certain persons who do not bother about the problems faced by people,'' he added. Mr. Iyer said that the next World War would be waged on the issue of water. Speaking on the occasion, S.K. Agarwal, Director, Ministry of Environment and Forests, said that the database drawn up in the course of the study would help the Government in ensuring sustainable development in the State. "The report can be considered a tool for environment management,'' he said. C.Chalapathy Rao, chief coordinator of the carrying capacity study, gave a detailed presentation on the occasion. He said that the participating agencies had extensively studied various parameters to develop a broad scientific database. The carrying capacity study was conducted in the GKR region consisting of Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kollam.
