Cold wave toll 616

New Delhi Jan. 19. Piercing cold wave continued to torment northern, eastern and central parts of the country as 45 more died taking the death toll to 616 as dense fog disrupted road, train and air traffic at several places.

Uttar Pradesh bore the brunt as 35 more succumbed pushing the death roll to 402, followed by Bihar 100. Allahabad shivered at one degree celsius making it the coldest day in 30 years.

Kanpur city and adjoining areas remained in grip of severe cold wave as mercury remained at 5.6 degrees celsius.

Unofficial sources put the toll at over 200.
