Thrissur and Ernakulam neck and neck

ALAPPUZHA JAN. 16. A close fight between various districts marked the second day of the 43rd State Schools Youth Festival which witnessed some quality performances in dance competitions and the light music event.

The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, had inaugurated the festival at the main venue at the Alappuzha SDV School Ground yesterday evening. The event is being held simultaneously on 11 stages. While a sizeable crowd was present at the venues of dance and music competitions, very few people could be seen at the venues of recitation and other events. When results of 20 events were declared by 7.30 p.m. Thrissur and Ernakulam shared the honours with 90 points each. Kozhikkode district with 85 points is placed third.

Barring a spate of appeals, the conduct of the youth festival was otherwise blemishless. As many as 132 appeals have been filed against verdicts till evening. Eight appeals have been filed in the Mohiniyattom event which was held yesterday. The daughter of the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, is contesting in the event on the basis of an appeal against the district-level verdict.

Thiruvanamthapuram and Kottayam districts with 83 points each are placed fourth and are followed by Palakkad and Kollam with 81 and 78 points respectively. The host district, Alappuzha, has secured 72 points.

In the Bharatanatyam event for boys, Amal Mohan of the Govt. VHSS, Neriamangalam, secured the first place. N. R. Aanzel of the SKVHS, Kadambattukonam, finished second. The third place went to V. Rahul of the RVSM HSS, Prayar.

The winner of the Bharatanatyam event was the only participant from Government school from among various competitors. The winner, Amal Mohan, comes from a poor family. In light music event for boys, R. S. Sarath of the Kunhali Marakkar High School, Kottakkal, won the first prize. P. Vaisakh Somnath of the NSS HSS, Kalpetta, was adjudged second and S. Sooraj of the Government Model BHSS, Thycaud, finished third.

In the light music event for women, the first prize went to Athira Raj of the St. John Baptist EMHSS, Kadamathukadavu. R. Sangeeta of GAEMHS, Mannoor, finished second. The third place went to M. Mridula of NSS HSS Meenchanda, Kozhikkode.

In the violin oriental event, L. Athira of the Christ Nagar E HSS was declared the winner. The second and the thrid prizes went to the Holy Family CGHS, Chembukkavu, Thrissur and GMMGHSS, Palakkad.

The winners of other events are: poetry writing; M. S. Athira, GMHSS Vellamunda (first), C.H. Rajeesha, LFGHSS, Kanhangad (second) Niyathi R. Krishna, CHS Punalur (third).
