Railways must act

Sir, — The gruesome train accidents in the past three months - the derailment of the Kacheguda-Bangalore Express and the earlier derailment of the Rajdhani Express near Gaya killing 130 persons would surely make the common man think twice before boarding a train. It has become a routine for the Railway Ministers and officials to rush to the scene of accident, express their sorrow and opinion for its cause, announce ex-gratia payments to the victims' families and initiate an inquiry, and there ends the matter.

Such inquiries and reports have so far failed to stir the Railways to ensure the utmost safety.
