Man from City among victims

BANGALORE Dec. 21. One of the 19 victims, who died in the train accident in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh, was from Bangalore. Of the 101 injured, 15 were from different parts of the State.

The deceased was identified as Sajjan Raj (51) of Chamarajpet. Among the injured from the State, Nahida, Guruprasad Rao, Chand Basha, and Harikrishna were from Bangalore; Rataf Ali, Satish Kumar, Rayamallu, and Pillappa from Kolar; Adiappa from Tumkur; Kalini from Bidar; and Abdul Matheen, S.V. Basha, and Narayanamma were from Chintamani.

Of the injured who arrived by the Karnataka Express, Surendranath Modi from Mehboobnagar and Phakiramma were shifted to the Railway hospital here. Other victims were treated as outpatients and discharged. An 11-member team of medical personnel from Bowring Hospital was rushed to the City Railway Station.

A special train with 200 relatives of the victims and medical personnel was sent to the accident spot from here. Many of the Bangalore-bound victims were brought to the City by the Karnataka Express which arrived at 2.30 p.m. and a special train comprising unaffected bogies from the accident site. Those who were seriously injured were treated on arrival at the platform before they were taken to the railway hospital.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has assured the Railway authorities of all support in providing relief to the families of the victims and passengers of the ill-fated train. The Minister for Small-Scale Industries, R. Roshan Baig, has been asked to coordinate the relief operations on the State Government's behalf.

Among those who had a miraculous escape in the train accident were the 25 relatives of the KPCC General Secretary and former Wakf Board Chairman, Abdul Wahab.

Mr. Wahab's children, sisters-in-law, and other relatives were returning to Bangalore after attending a marriage in Hyderabad, one of Mr. Wahab's relatives told The Hindu.

After the train derailed, Mr. Wahab's son telephoned his family here and briefed them about the accident. A car was sent from Bangalore to bring those who were injured. They are being treated at HOSMAT Hospital here.
