Karnataka to compensate victims

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE DEC. 21. The Karnataka Minister for Small-Scale Industries, R. Roshan Baig, today said that the Government would grant compensation to the injured and the kin of those killed in the Kachiguda Express train accident.

This was in addition to the compensation announced by the Railways.

Mr. Baig told presspersons at the Bangalore City Railway Station that the compensation would be announced after the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, who was in New Delhi to attend the National Development Council meeting, returned to Bangalore.

Mr. Krishna has nominated Mr. Baig to coordinate the relief and rescue measures with the agencies concerned.

A release from the Chief Minister's office said Mr. Krishna had spoken to senior Railway officials in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and obtained details of the incident.

Naxalites involved?

Replying to questions from presspersons, Mr. Baig said the possibility of naxalite involvement in the derailment of the train could not be ruled out.

Although he had planed to visit the accident spot, he could not do so due to the non-availability of a helicopter, he added.

Meanwhile, a special train carrying the passengers of the derailed train reached Bangalore at 6 p.m.

Apart from Gopi of Secunderabad, who was injured in the mishap, others who arrived had travelled in the coaches of the derailed train which were not affected.

Mr. Baig and senior officials of the Railways were present to receive the passengers.

Governor's condolences

The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has offered condolences to the families of those killed in the accident.

In a message, he said their grief was shared by all the people of Karnataka.

He wished the injured a speedy recovery.
