'No move to allow foreign lawyers'

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 21. The Union Law Minister, Jana Krishnamurthy, has made it clear that there is no proposal to allow entry of foreign lawyers to practise in India. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, he said the Bar Council of India, which was empowered to frame rules, had not made any rules regarding the entry of foreign lawyers and the council was also opposed to any such move.

Nevertheless, he said, under the provisions of the Advocates Act, a foreign national could enrol himself as an advocate in India only if Indian citizens were permitted to practise law in his country and not subjected to any unfair discrimination in that country. Foreign nationals were permitted to practise law in India on a reciprocal basis only.

The Law Commission, which had undertaken a study and circulated a working paper on its review of various institutions, was yet to finalise its report on the matter, the Minister added.
