`CPI did not shield Bhargavi'

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Dec. 6. The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, has said that there was no attempt to shield the former Deputy Speaker, Bhargavi Thankappan, who was allegedly on the payrolls of Manichan, the first accused in the Kalluvathukkal liquor tragedy.

Replying to questions at a news conference here today, Mr. Bhargavan said the party had initiated action against Ms. Thankappan on the basis of the findings of the Justice V. P. Mohan Kumar Commission.

The party had no other way of finding the truth and an inquiry at the party level was not going help, he pointed out.

The CPI State secretary refused to be drawn into a comparison between his party and the CPI(M) on the action taken against party leaders involved in the alleged abkari pay-offs.

It was not the CPI policy to solicit funds from liquor barons and action would be taken against anyone found violating the party policy in this regard, he said.
