Savarkar, Phule statues to adorn Parliament House

NEW DELHI DEC. 6. The Parliament House complex would be adorned with statues, portraits of Veer Savarkar, Jyotiba Phule, Chandrashekar Azad, Mangal Pandey, and other revolutionaries.

At a meeting today chaired by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, it was also decided to have statues, portraits of Vasudeo Balwant Phadke, Hemu Kalani and the Chaphekar brothers.

Portraits, statues of a number of personalities such as Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Devi Lal, Kakasaheb Gadgil, Panjabrao Deshmukh and Ahilyabai Holkar would be installed in the Parliament House complex, a Lok Sabha Secretariat release said.

The meeting was attended by Shivraj Patil, Somnath Chatterjee, Pranab Mukherjee and J. Chittaranjan. The Speaker also informed the meeting that the statue of Chatrapati Shivaji on horseback could be ready for installation in the Parliament House precincts by March next year.

Meanwhile, the Vice President, B.S. Shekhawat, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, Manohar Joshi, the Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi, and several Union Ministers and former Prime Ministers, V.P. Singh, H.D. Deve Gowda, and others paid floral tributes at the statue of Ambedkar on the Parliament House lawns, on the occasion of his 46th death anniversary today.
