The award instituted by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment recognises BEL's track record in offering placement and a good work environment for the physically challenged. The Bangalore unit employs 102 physically challenged people. There are 202 employees with some form of physical disability in the entire company. The company provides free transport, hearing aids, foldable walking sticks, and callipers with special shoes to the physically challenged employees. Special ramps have been arranged in the buildings for them. They are encouraged to participate in seminars, sports, and fine arts activities. The company also runs Ashankura, a school for special children, at Jalahalli here.
