St. Mary's Orphanage getting ready for jubilee

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Nov. 20. It will be a "homecoming" for some distinguished visitors soon when St Mary's Orphanage in D'Costa Layout celebrates its golden jubilee. It had a humble beginning in 1952 born out of the farsighted vision of Archbishop, Thomas Pothacamury, who had the orphanage built. Ten years later the school was started with 12 boys in a shed; today it is a full-fledged high school.

For those who cannot cope with academic studies, there are plans to revive training units in various skills. Many of the old boys who return for a nostalgic visit, have their own industrial and businesses today. They express their warm feelings for the institution, which fed, clothed, and educated them and turned them into "somebody" in this world. On Sunday evening, a meeting will be held at the orphanage to start an Old Boys' Association and past inmates have been invited.

At present, the orphanage houses 210 boys and all are treated equally. But the Director, Fr. Stany Viegas, says there are some comforts that are lacking. For example, hot bath water for the boys, some of whom were barely four. Funds are needed to install a solar water heater and other facilities. Those who want to help can call 5471259 or 5470369.
