dated 14th November, 1952: Dr. Radhakrishnan Elected President of UNESCO

On the 12th in Paris, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-President of India, taking over the Presidency of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, made a call for "a creative effort for peace". Earlier, the Chairman of UNESCO's Executive Board, Dr. Paulo Carneiro (of Brazil) had proposed his name as "one of great heart and high mind, and a great sage of our time".

Speaking from the dais set against the large blue and white United Nations flag, Dr. Radhakrishnan thanked the assembly for conferring the high honour upon him and his country. He declared that UNSECO's main task was to develop the will to create peace and "to educate people to live in a world community". Other remarks by the new President: "I am deeply touched by the way in which France's delegate stood aside to enable this conference to elect a delegate from the East. I am grateful for this token of confidence and affection." (French Education Minister Andre Marie had declined the nomination stating that France in the person of M. Leon Blum had been elected in 1946.)
