Lucknow Nov. 11. Hundreds of Samajwadi Party leaders and activists, including its general secretary, Amar Singh, were arrested today during the party-sponsored "virodh diwas''— protest day — even as violent incidents were reported from several places of the State forcing police to resort to lathicharge.

The SP workers blocked rail and road traffic at many places and indulged in stone-throwing, damaging vehicles, official sources here said.

The party had called the protest to press for its various demands, including the dismissal of the Mayawati Government.

Mr. Singh, arrested while trying to march towards the Raj Bhavan, alleged that he and his party colleague, Shivpal Singh Yadav, were beaten by police. The SP activists were later released.
