Latest trends in medicine on radio

By K. Srinivas Reddy

HYDERABAD Nov. 11. Continuing Medical Education in India received a fillip on Sunday when WorldSpace India launched a novel programme, Tonic - D, in addition to its 20 channels of digital music. The new programme, aimed at the medical practitioner keen on updating his knowledge on the emerging trends in his field, will be broadcast every other Sunday at 11 a.m. The debut discussion aired last Sunday was on management of acute myocardial infarction by Subash Chandra and moderated by B.S. Ajai Kumar of Sada Sharada Medical Research and Communications.

It is not just listening to a discussion. The listeners can be a part of group discussions through `call-ins' and chat facility offered by the radio company. The lecture/discussion will also be supplemented by multimedia course material, which can be sent directly to a doctor's personal computer without the use of Internet connection.

To receive the multimedia material, one has to get a PC adaptor 128k and connect their PCs to the WorldSpace receiver and tune to a particular channel (BCID 1085).

Even in the absence of a PC, one could listen to the audio lecture.

The next lectures scheduled are `Epidemiology of Asthma — a newer perspective' by P.K. Vedanthan (to be broadcast on November 24), `Approach to Infertility' by Dr. Kamini Rao (December 8) and `Ethics and Medical Aspects of Medical Practitioners' by Dr. Ramesh B.S.

WorldSpace has satellites that map most parts of the world.
