Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Ramya Kannan
Devi, a seven year-old-girl, hailing from Kovur in Andhra Pradesh, was employed as domestic help in a house in Pudur, Ashok Nagar, here. She was assigned the task of looking after children for a monthly salary of Rs.200. She was often beaten for allegedly stealing from the house. Things came to a head when a member of the house began chasing her out of the house and hitting her with a belt. Members of the public, who were witness to this, called Child Line. Rescued from the home, the child was given treatment at the ESI Hospital and the Government Royapettah Hospital. She was produced before the Board on Thursday and the employers, who were also summoned, were ordered to pay the fine amount, to be kept in a fixed deposit in Devi's name. Meanwhile, preparations are on to restore Devi to her parents, Kannaiya and Venkatama, in Andhra Pradesh.
