Housing scheme for EPF subscribers

NEW DELHI Nov. 1. The Government plans to launch a housing scheme on the birthday of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, on December 25, for the benefit of over 2.5 crore workers who are subscribers of the Employees Provident Fund.

This is part of the Labour Ministry's efforts to streamline and strengthen the social security cover for the working class.

The initiative for the scheme came from the Labour Ministry, and the Union Urban Development Ministry has joined forces with it and agreed to provide necessary assistance through its agencies. In fact, the Urban Development Ministry is preparing the scheme and working out finer details covering financial and other aspects. Announcing the decision to launch the scheme by allotting some houses from the 10,000-odd houses available with the Delhi Development Authority, the Union Labour Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, and the Union Urban Development Minister, Ananth Kumar, said at a joint media conference that a committee, under the chairmanship of the Urban Development secretary, was formulating the scheme and was expected to submit the proposal by November 15.
