Move to privatise defence production criticised

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 20. The All-India Defence SC/ST Employees' Federation today objected to the move to privatise defence production. At an all-India conference, in which employees from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Maharashtra took part, they said that privatisation would not only affect security interests but also cast a shadow on the reservation policy.

Addressing the gathering, the Dalit leader, Udit Raj, who was the chief guest, said India's needs could not be addressed by the private sector alone. He also expressed the apprehension that research in the strategic defence field could suffer since private enterprises preferred not to spend much on such activities.
