Grand start to Brahmostavam

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA OCT. 7. Amidst chanting of Vedic hyms, the ``Dwajarohanam' festival was today traditionally performed at the famous hill temple, signalling the commencement of the nine-day annual Brahmotsavam of Lord Venkateswara.

The celestial cloth with the imprint of Lord `Garuda' was hoisted atop the 60-feet-high `Dwajasthambham' in the auspicious Meena Lagnam, amidst chanting of vedic hymns, to the accompaniment of the `Chandi Melam' specially commissioned for the festival.

Temple priests also chanted passages from the `Garuda - Puranam' eulogising the valour and might of Lord Garuda. The entire temple complex was gripped with religious ecstasy and the air charged with the traditional beats of the drums.

Earlier, Lord Malayappaswamy accompanied by His two consorts --Sri Devi and Bhudevi mounted on a `Golden Tiruchi' was taken around the mada streets in a grand procession escorted with the parivara devathas - Anantha, Garuda, Chakrathlwar and Senadhipathi.

Later, in the night, the processional deities were again taken around in a procession -- this time mounted on the Seshavahanam.

In connection with the Dwajarohanam festival, vishesha samarpana was conducted to Malayappa swamy and special functions were performed at yagasala.
