According to police, Shyama alias Veena, a ninth standard student of the Cotton Hill Girls Higher Secondary School, Vazhuthacaud had gone along with her father, Jayapalan, and her mother, Jalajakumari, to watch a film last night. The parents, residents of Thankavila near Thirumala, who were staying in the canteen, scolded the girl as she had walked ahead while returning. Enraged over the rebuke, the girl had poured kerosene and set herself ablaze on entering the canteen at around 9-30 p.m. The girl, who was rushed to the Medical College Hospital, was later shifted to the ICU, where she succumbed to the injuries today.
