Cable operator asked to return deposit

MANGALORE SEPT. 24. The Dakshina Kannada District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has declared that the cable service provider is bound to return the deposit collected from a subscriber if the latter chooses to sever the connection at any point of time. It has ruled that failure on part of the provider to do so is tantamount to deficiency of service.

On a complaint by Elias Pereira against the cable service provider, Ozwald D'Souza, of Kulai, the President of the forum, M. Shama Bhat, directed the latter to return the deposit of Rs. 1,500 with interest of 12 per cent a year from November 13, 2001 till date of payment. The forum also directed Mr. Oswald to pay Rs. 1,500 as compensation and costs. A press note from the Secretary of Balakedarara Seva Sangha, Rajavarma K., here on Tuesday said its Cable TV Works was providing cable TV service to its members. He said it was creating awareness among people of Panambur, Bykampady, Hosabettu, and surrounding areas on issues pertaining to cable TV.
