Contempt proceedings against PCC chief, Telugu daily

By Our Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD SEPT. 16. C.Y. Somayajulu, judge of the A.P. High Court, on Monday took note of the comments made by M. Satyanarayana Rao, president of A.P. Congress Committee, with regard to transfer of a criminal case from Mahaboobnagar to Hyderabad and directed the advocate general to initiate proceedings for committing contempt of court.

It may be recalled that Narayana Reddy, a Congress activist, filed a petition seeking transfer of criminal case pending before the district court of Mahaboobnagar. He contended that the present Minister, Ramasubba Reddy, is accused in the case and the Law Minister was advocate appearing on behalf of him. He said that there may not be free and fair atmosphere in Mahaboobnagar district. After hearing all the parties, Justice Somayajulu directed that this case be transferred to metropolitan sessions judge, Hyderabad.

On Monday morning it was brought to the notice of the judge that M. Satyanarayana Rao passed certain remarks about the transfer of this case and these were published in Eenadu, local Telugu daily, prominently.

The judge felt that the `comments' of M. Satyanarayana Rao makes readers feel that this court at the instance of the Minister for his convenience transferred the case to Hyderabad, which is insinuation against the court per se''.

While taking cognisance of this criminal contempt of the court the registry was asked to send papers to advocate general for initiating contempt proceedings against M. Satyanarayana Rao and editor and publisher of Eenadu and reporter who reported the item.
