NPS students win battle of brains

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Sept. 14. "Who kissed the girls and made them cry in the nursery rhymes?" "What is technical term used for removal of President?" "Which disease is called the white death?" And "according to the Bible, who was the third person on earth?"...

The regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz that was held here on Saturday saw a battle of brains among teams from schools and colleges in Bangalore, which consisted of students from standards VIII to XII.

As many as 724 teams participated in the written preliminary rounds and six of them qualified for the regional finals, which are being held at 11 centres across the country.

The winner from the regional round will represent Karnataka at the All-India finals in Chennai on October 26.

Intelligent answers from the six participating teams coupled with interesting rounds of questions made it a lively event. The enthusiastic schoolchildren, who knew almost all the answers, stole the show. The audience was also enthused by the presence of former international athlete, Ashwini Nachappa, who gave away the prizes.

Other than the normal rounds of questioning, there were rounds such as "Be choosy," "Gallery," "Matrix," "Topsyturvy" and "Mera Bharat Mahaan."

Finally, Alok P. and Shitendra B. of National Public School, Indiranagar - Team No. 1 -- emerged winners and took home a cash prize of Rs. 8,000, besides a Hercules bicycle each. They also reserved a place for themselves in the national finals. The runners-up were Rajesh T. V. and Arun Kumar from Jindal Public School.

They missed the first place by 24 points, and took home a cash prize of Rs. 6,000, besides gift articles.

Uma Mahesh and Vivek N. Prakash from National College, Jayanagar, bagged the third prize of Rs. 4,000.

The first prize for the "Best team name" was bagged by K. V. Goutham and Manu S. Kashyap from BVB's Nagarajuna Vidyaniketan for naming their team as "Wizz, Bizz, and Hiss in The Hindu Quiz." The second prize was bagged by Suveer S. and Aditya K. M. of the Nagasena Vidyalaya for their innovative team name "Quizana Soudha's Quizzappans." The national sponsors for the event were Eveready, FourthR, Britannia, Titan Dash Watches, Coca-Cola and TI Cycles. The regional sponsors were Kwality Walls, Kissan, Indo-Nissin Foods, Edurite Technologies Ltd., and Kempfort.
